How to do a clinical trial assessment

Effective carbon emission reduction results from identifying carbon emissions hotspots and focusing on where there can be greatest positive impact.

The industry Low Carbon Clinical Trials (iLCCT) consortium has developed Clinical Trials Carbon Calculator, which enables trials to be ‘Sustainable by Design’.

Stakeholders responsible for decision-making in clinical trial protocol development can ‘design out’ carbon emissions, along with reducing carbon emissions during trial management. The Calculator can also support clinical trial carbon reporting through consistent, industry standard methodology.

The Clinical Trials: Environmental Assessment Method document outlines the method for estimating the carbon emission from clinical trials which is, in alignment with the International Standard for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) (ISO14044) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard. The Method document forms part of the framework of guidance and tools which the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition (SHC) and our partner organisations have created to reduce carbon emissions from clinical trials and the associated value chain.
